1 John 4:11-12

[11] Beloved, if God so loved us,
we also ought to love one another.
[12] No one has ever seen God;
if we love one another,
God abides in us
and his love is perfected in us.

Matthew 5:21-26

[21] You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ [22] But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. [23] So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, [24] leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. [25] Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. [26] Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Meditating on the Scriptures Together

1 John 4:9-10
[9] In this the love of God
was made manifest among us,
that God sent his only Son into the world,
so that we might live through him.
[10] In this is love,
not that we have loved God
but that he loved us
and sent his Son
to be the propitiation for our sins.

Matthew 1:18-25
[18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. [19] And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. [20] But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. [21] She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” [22] All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

[23] “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). [24] When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, [25] but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

1 John 4:7-8
[7] Beloved, let us love one another,
for love is from God,
and whoever loves has been born of God
and knows God.
[8] Anyone who does not love
does not know God,
because God is love.

Matthew 5:17-20
[17] Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. [18] For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. [19] Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. [20] For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Meditating on the Scriptures Together

1 John 4:4-6
[4] Little children,
you are from God and have overcome them,
for he who is in you
is greater than he who is in the world.
[5] They are from the world;
therefore they speak from the world,
and the world listens to them.
[6] We are from God.
Whoever knows God listens to us;
whoever is not from God
does not listen to us.
By this we know the Spirit of truth
and the spirit of error.

Matthew 5:14-16
[14] You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
[15] Nor do people light a lamp
and put it under a basket, but on a stand,
and it gives light to all in the house.
[16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see
your good works and give glory
to your Father who is in heaven.
