Suggested Bible Study and Prayers

(Passages that we will refer to in next Sunday's worship)

1 Samuel 21

Lord of Hosts, the righteous flee from the wicked in a time of necessary retreat. The day is full of danger, and evil men lurk in shadows even within Your church to destroy her ministry. Grant us bread from heaven for our warfare on earth. Though we hide for a moment among the Philistines, we will never forget who we serve, for You are God. Though we seem mad in the eyes of the foolish, You will use every means to protect us and to preserve us, for the gates of hell will not prevail against Your church. We sound the retreat of necessity, but only for a moment, in a day of dire trouble, for we are always on the offense in our service of You.

Deuteronomy 8

Great God, only You could have brought the descendants of Jacob into the Promised Land. We have been given an even better possession through faith in Your Son. This we have learned from Your Word, the necessary food for our souls. We were once dead in our sins, but we have been made alive in Your Son. Feed us with the Bread from heaven, that we might hear His voice and believe. You are able to take us through the wilderness of this age. You are bringing us into a very good land. We long to walk in that place. We bless You for Your wonderful promises. Help us to believe and to live. Grant to us a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Send forth the Water of Your Holy Spirit from the great Rock of our Salvation. We will not perish with the nations of the world. We will live.

Acts 2

Great God, You have granted to Your church the promised blessing of the Holy Spirit. You have enabled us to hear the message of Your mighty works. Glory to Your Name, O God! You will pour out Your Spirit on all flesh in the age to come. That age has broken in now through Your great work of salvation. All who call upon the Name of the Lord as worshipers in the covenant assembly shall be brought from death to life. That Name above all names is Jesus, who is the Lord of Glory. He is yet alive, and so we call upon Him even now, for He is both Man and God. He is David’s Son and David’s Lord. He is our King and our Messiah. Our sins sent Him to the cross. We now repent of all known sin. We thank You for the covenant sign and seal of baptism, testifying of the life to come by the cleansing work of the Spirit and the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ. We give ourselves to You and to one another, as we devote ourselves to the way of worship as the community of salvation in this present age.
