1 Samuel 15

O God of all Comfort, how long will we grieve over our disappointments? You are the Sovereign Lord of All, and You do all things well. Consecrate us by Your Spirit in the depths of our souls. Teach us how to see with the eyes of faith. There is much that You have not revealed, but there is also so much that You have made known to us. Teach us to hear Your Word and to move ahead in love. Do not take Your Holy Spirit from us. Have we grieved You deeply and neglected the duty of repentance? We fear that this is the case. Show us our hidden sins again that we might turn from them in truth immediately. Play music for our hearts that will refresh us in Christ, for surely You will rejoice over us again with singing, for we are Your beloved children, and the bride of Your Son.

Numbers 11

O God, we must not murmur against You. We will only bring trouble upon ourselves with our continuous complaining. Please forgive us, O Lord. You send Bread from heaven, and we still find fault with You. We deliberately ignore all of the blessings that You have granted to us, even seeking the day of our death. We should be thanking You for our salvation and serving You with a joy that is forever full and real. Forgive us, and restore us again to useful service. Father, we thank You for taking us out of the land of sin. We thank You that Your hand is not shortened. You are able to pour out Your Spirit upon our leaders. They point us forward in holiness, but it is not as if we are devoid of the Spirit throughout Your church. We are filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody in our hearts to You, thanking You in Christ in all situations, and submitting to one another out of reverence for our Redeemer. The promise is for us and for our children, as many as You will call to Yourself.

Acts 2

Great God, You have granted to Your church the promised blessing of the Holy Spirit. You have enabled us to hear the message of Your mighty works. Glory to Your Name, O God! You will pour out Your Spirit on all flesh in the age to come. That age has broken in now through Your great work of salvation. All who call upon the Name of the Lord as worshipers in the covenant assembly shall be brought from death to life. That Name above all names is Jesus, who is the Lord of Glory. He is yet alive, and so we call upon Him even now, for He is both Man and God. He is David’s Son and David’s Lord. He is our King and our Messiah. Our sins sent Him to the cross. We now repent of all known sin. We thank You for the covenant sign and seal of baptism, testifying of the life to come by the cleansing work of the Spirit and the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Christ. We give ourselves to You and to one another, as we devote ourselves to the way of worship as the community of salvation in this present age.

1 Samuel 14

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in ways that we may never fully understand, Your Son has won an astounding victory for us. As a solo warrior, with none to help Him, He waited for just the right time and place to answer the taunts of a deadly foe. Through the cross, Your Son has utterly defeated the devil, making a public spectacle of Him. In the ranks of the enemy there is great confusion to this day as a result of this mighty victory. You have brought us into a land that is dripping with the honey of Your presence. In Word, sacrament, and prayer, You have made our eyes bright with the gift of the sweetness of Your Spirit. Help us to enjoy You with the eager desire of hungry people who have been denied food for longer than is necessary. We ask you to grant us victory in the spiritual battle before us. Restrain our foolishness, for we would destroy one another for no good cause if we were left to our own devices. May we not die from self-righteous and empty deeds that come from our own wicked imaginations. Grant that we would serve You truly and valiantly according to Your Word, for we are Your people, and the Commander of our forces is our great Redeemer and Lord.

Genesis 1

Creator God, You have made all things of nothing. You were in the beginning, and Your Spirit hovered over the face of the deep. In the person of Your Son, You have spoken the world into being. He is the Light of the World, and through Him Light was made. Your Spirit is a fountain of living water for our souls, and by Your Spirit You created the waters and defined their boundaries. You have given us the true Bread from heaven, our great Redeemer, and through Him You made all the vegetation that has covered the dry land. Father, You ordained that the sun, moon, and stars would have dominion over light and darkness. You have filled the waters above with the birds of the air and the waters below with the fish of the sea. You have given us all kinds of creatures, covering the dry land with such a variety of living things. O Marvelous Lord, You then created man, male and female, in Your image. You have granted to us all that we need for life, and have placed us in dominion over all things in the created order. Blessed be Your Name, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for You alone created the heavens and the earth.

Acts 2

1 Samuel 13

Great Ruler over Your people, You have defeated our mortal foe, for Your Son has won a decisive battle on our behalf. We do not need to hide in secret caves, trembling from fear of man. Your Son has offered up His life as a whole burnt offering. He never did anything foolish. He never attempted to get that which was not rightly His. Therefore, You have blessed Him in every battle, and He has won for us both heaven and eternity. Powerful enemies will never rule over us in the land of our Messiah, for You will cleanse Your home completely from any disturbing adversary, and we will dwell in peace with You forever.

Isaiah 8

Almighty Father, You have spoken through the prophets. Your words were faithful in the mouths of Your holy servants, but they longed for a better fulfillment, one that is ours now in Your church. We still desire the best of all answers to our holiest longings. Come soon, Lord Jesus! Until that final day, there is some measure of difficulty among us. Yet You have given Your church the privilege of being a sign to the world. You have planted the seed of Your true Word in our hearts, and we believe. Why will men turn to deceiving demons, when You have clearly spoken to Your people? We trust in You and we cling to Your Word and Your testimony.

Matthew 1

Lord God, grant that we would see Jesus Christ rightly in Your Word. He is the fulfillment of Your every promise. You have granted many kings to reign over Your people, but Jesus is far above them all. We thank You for the wonder of His two natures, for He is both human and divine. In His one person He has fully saved us from our sins. He is not only the Son of Mary. He is God with us. In Him we have been given a most excellent and secure heritage.

1 Samuel 12

Father God, we hear the words of our Mediator calling us to a life of faith and obedience. We have no word of testimony against the Lord Jesus Christ. He has done all things well. He has not defrauded us or oppressed us. Far be it from Him to sin in any way. You are our witness today that we find no evil thing in our great Redeemer, and we have no excuse to withhold from Him our full devotion. He has rescued us from every adversary, defeating even sin and death, and making Satan flee from us whenever we would sincerely resist that father of lies. We will obey the voice of the Lord. May Your hand be with us because of our great Messiah King. Our wickedness has been great. We fear You. May Your Son pray for us that our souls will not return to empty things that cannot profit or deliver. We are a people who live for Your Name’s sake. We will serve You faithfully with our whole heart. Do not utterly sweep us away in Your righteous wrath.

Isaiah 7

O Lord God, the King that You have provided for Your church is faithful and true. You know the wickedness of those who seek to overwhelm us, but You have the power to stop the hand of every adversary. Make us firm in faith. Help us to rejoice in the sign that You have chosen for us. A virgin has conceived. Immanuel has been given to us. Through Him, sin and death have been overthrown. We thank You for the wonder of His mighty love. The very thought that You are with us through the person of Your Son is a comfort in the present day of trouble. Though all of our problems have not yet been removed from us, the sign of Immanuel speaks to us of a powerful victory that can never be reversed. The Christ has come for our atonement. He will return again to rescue us from this evil age.

O God our Protector, Your enemies would eagerly desire to hurt us and bring disgrace upon us. Even now our brothers and sisters suffer at the hands of brutal foes. Send forth the strongest Deliverer, Christ our Lord, that He might put violent men to flight. May even the most brutal enemies of Your church become Your friends through the only Way of peace. Work salvation throughout Your church as many people are drawn to Your Son. We rejoice greatly in Him.

Isaiah 6

Holy and Majestic God, You are the Lord. You reign from the heavenly sanctuary, and You are holy. Our sin is made more obvious in the light of Your presence. We thank You for the full atonement which is ours in Jesus Christ. We have been set apart for Your purposes and are willing to be sent out for Your glory. 1 Samuel 10

Glorious Lord, You have anointed Your Son to be Prince over His heritage. We bow before this mighty King, the Lord Jesus Christ. You know all things. You could easily tell us the details of the days ahead of us, since these are all known to You. Fill us with Your Spirit and give us a heart to do the good that our hands find to do. Grant to us a fuller communion with our great Prophet, Priest, and King. Draw us near to Him again in solemn covenant assembly that we might know that we have been chosen by You. Remind us that our worth is in our Messiah. Send us forth day by day in peace and security, despite the opposition that may come to us from worthless men.

Genesis 28

O God Who Sanctifies Us, You know the road that we must travel in order for Your holy plans to be fulfilled. Lord God, will we be so foolish as to think that we know who should lead us by looking at the outward features of a man? By this way we would choose a Saul, and reject the Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. What do we have today to give to You that You might show us the way to heaven? We have nothing to give but our sorry lives. These moments and days of both trouble and opportunity we offer up to You. We live for You. Father, You know that we love You. We have no confidence in ourselves that we will do any better than we have done, since our weakness is evident. In a moment we can fall. If we are to be more courageous and noble than we have been thus far, it must be from Your strength and not from our own desires or power. Therefore be glorified as we come to You in the Name of the great Messiah of Israel. Send us on our way in peace. You are God.

Psalm 139

Great Lord, You know us. You created us. Our days were planned by You before we began any of them. You are everywhere and You know everything. What a wonderful love You have for Your people! You have helped us in countless ways, even when we have been utterly unaware of Your presence and goodness. May we bless Your Name forever. Please protect us day by day and deliver us from this evil age at the appointed hour. When we have accomplished the purposes that You have for Your servants here, lead us home again to You.
