1 Samuel 1

Lord God, You have granted to us many blessings. Though we grieve for what we cannot have, surely You hear the cries of Your loved ones. We know of nothing that can be given to us that would take away our pain, but You are God, and You will help Your people. We give our lives to You. Our children are surely gifts from You. Though love for others opens the door to loss and sorrow, You will help us when we are troubled in spirit. There is an assurance of Your love that can only come from You. Even when we cannot feel any joy, surely one day we will laugh, for You will give to us our heart’s desire. In Your Son, we have everything we need for the greatest happiness. You are so kind to us. Though we live in this world of misery, You are with us. We give our lives to You again. As we are able, we also give You the lives of our children. As long as they live, they are Yours. Even when they die, they are in Your hands. Blessed be Your Name.

Psalm 110

Great Redeemer, You are Lord, and Your Son is also the Lord at Your right hand. Together with Your Son and Your Spirit, You are one God. May Jesus Christ rule as the King of Your kingdom forever. May we be willing servants of our royal High Priest every day. Surely no one can stand against Him, for He reigns eternally in the fullness of Your Holy Spirit.

John 20

Lord God, we marvel at the empty tomb. We consider the placement of the linen cloths lying there, cloths that once covered the dead body of Your Son. We think of the other cloth that once covered a lifeless face, now folded in a place by itself. We believe. Then we consider the familiar voice of Jesus calling His friend by her own name, the voice of a risen Man who walks in the presence of angels. Yes, we believe. He is risen. He is the firstborn of many brethren. As He is, so shall we be. Though we die, there is no point in anyone clinging to our flesh, for our spirits shall ascend on high, and when the Son of Man calls us out from the grave, we shall rise again, not with mortal flesh, but with immortal bodies. We long for Your coming, O Lord! Your Father is our Father. Your God is our God, and we have peace. Father God, fill Your church with Your Holy Spirit. As You sent Your Son, not to be served, but to serve, send us forward in Your love. Use Your church to declare the forgiveness of sins. Grant us a very secure faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and in our coming resurrection. Though we have not yet seen, we do sincerely believe.

Hosea 2

Lord God, there is hope now for all of our brothers and sisters in Christ. We should put away our foolish sinning, for we have been redeemed by Your Son. When we look back upon our lives of sin, we hate our rebellion against You. You continued to provide for us day by day, and yet we used Your good gifts for more and more sinning. Our false lovers were no good for us at all. How could we have ever thought that idols would be the answer for us? Turn us back home again moment by moment. Keep us far away from the love of sinning. Open up our hearts to the great hope that is ours in Christ the Lord. Make us lie down in safety again. We receive Your steadfast love for us with amazement. Our glorious God, Your grace is great, and Your mercy is very powerful.

Psalm 16

Merciful Lord, we love You. You have heard us when we cried out to You. We faced distressing thoughts and agonizing fears. You heard our cry, and have caused us to rest again in Jesus Christ. Your promises are very secure. We will not be moved. The age of resurrection is surely coming. We are the payment of Your Son’s holy vow. We will praise You in the land of the living. Lord Jesus Christ, though being in very nature God, when You came to redeem us You humbled Yourself and made Yourself nothing. Though You were rich, for our sakes You became poor, so that through Your poverty we might become rich. We confess how unlike You we are in our attitudes and actions. We strive for recognition and acclaim from others, and we sulk and become bitter if we do not get it. We look out for our own needs and concerns, failing to care for others except for when it serves our own purposes. Forgive us our sin and renew our hearts. Grant us to realize that we only achieve greatness and gain our lives by giving them away. Work in us by the power of Your Spirit so that we become more like You and so bring glory to our Father in heaven. Amen.

Lord God Almighty, carry Your people through the great tribulation that will come against the earth. Help us in the day of rebellion and apostasy. Daniel 11

Sovereign Lord, You are the Lord of men and angels. You rule over our families and churches. You send us help from on high to confirm and strengthen us. You also correct us when we wander from Your way. Nations rise and fall according to Your plan, but Your church shall move forward in the strength of our Messiah King. He will have a great victory against all false gods and hypocrisy. You will bring low the pride of men. You will use all of the resources in Your hands in order to accomplish Your purposes. Even with all the strength of men in their arsenals, no armies among men can stand against You. You have sent forth Your gospel to every land near and far, and Your Word is winning a great victory as Your Spirit works powerfully over the centuries. Throughout this age there is much suffering alongside the great victories of faith. Men make their plans for grandeur, but they shall not stand. Armies are swept away, and even the strongest men face the end of their days. For centuries men and nations have set themselves against Your covenant people. They would insult Your Name, and destroy Your people, but You give help to Your beloved children. Though we stumble, You have a plan for the coming age that will certainly be accomplished. You will magnify Your own Name, and You will easily defeat the proudest foes. No enemy that expects to destroy You, Your gospel, or Your people will be able to see the fullness of their evil desires accomplished. They shall all come to their end, and there will be none to help them. You are the everlasting God, and You will be praised forever and ever.

Psalm 19

Creator God, we hear of You from every mountaintop and from the vastness of the oceans that exist according to Your will. In the skies we see who You are from all that You have made. But now You have spoken to us so clearly and wonderfully in Your written word. Help us to love Your speech, and keep us from the foolishness of willful rebellion against You. Change us that we might love Your Law more and more with a pure heart.

Daniel 10

Father God, there are troubling things all around us that we do not understand. Our comfort is that You not only understand all things, but You also have planned all things, and know where all things are heading. We are able to stand only because You are in charge. The earthly days of the Old Testament prophets are long gone. They now live above where Your Son is at Your right hand. They once longed to understand the visions and messages that had come to them. Now they see Your Son and live with Your people who have been perfected in holiness. We thank You for the coming of Jesus Christ, and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. We have been granted increased clarity about Your eternal plan through these great events. Yet there is so much that we do not know, and so much that we do not comprehend. Your prophets of old trusted You when they spoke of great things little by little and in various ways. Help us to keep our eyes focused upon Your Son who has spoken so wonderfully to us in His life, death, and resurrection. Help us to trust You with our lives even when we do not understand.

Psalm 42

Father God, in the day of depression and sadness, You are still God. Though we seem to forget You, You have never forgotten us. We will hope in You. We will remember You even in the worst time of trouble. You will surely deliver us. You are powerful. You love us. You are present everywhere, and You will save. We hope in You now.

Psalm 43

Almighty King, You are not intimidated by strong men with evil intentions. Well-armed nations with thousands of soldiers do not impress You, no matter how powerful and wicked they may be. You are above them all. We will praise You forever. Our hope is in You alone.

Daniel 9

Lord God, hear us when we cry out to You. You know the facts about our sin. You are perfectly righteous, but Your church has committed treachery against You. You have mercy and forgiveness which we need so desperately, for we have sinned against both Your Law and Your grace. We have sinned against Your Law because we have ignored Your commandments. We have sinned against Your grace. We have been given so much and have responded as if Your gifts to us were small. Please incline Your ear to us again and see that Your church is in great need. Please hear us and forgive us. Do this for Your own glory, for we are Your people for whom Your Son shed His precious blood. We know that we are greatly loved by You. We have been granted a holy union with Your Son, who is the King and Head of Your church. Grant to us Your salvation now, and sanctify Your church.

Psalm 103

Glorious God, thank You for Your abundant mercies. We glorify Your name. You have given us true love that will never end. You have blessed Your people of old. They are alive now in Your presence. Thank you for the forgiveness of sins. Take away from us all the evil that remains in us. You are full of compassion and You will help us forever. Our lives seem so small and so temporary. In You we will rejoice throughout all eternity. We will bless Your Name in the company of angels and resurrected saints. We bless You from the depths of our hearts, O Lord, forever and ever.

Isaiah 49

Great God, Your Son is the One! He is the Savior. He is the Suffering King. You have called Him from the womb. He has saved Jacob. He has even saved Your beloved elect from every tribe and tongue and nation. You have made Him to be a Covenant to Your people. A day of the greatest provision is surely coming. None of this could every have happened without our Messiah. You have comforted us in Him. Even if our mothers and fathers have forgotten us, You will never forget us. Your plans for us are glorious. We are to be a holy bride. The children of our bereavement will yet speak in our ears. There will be many for the ones who thought that they were left all alone. This will be the day of resurrection glory. We will know that You are the Lord. We wait for You, and we shall not be put to shame. You will save our children who have been taken captive by a foul adversary. You are the mighty one of Jacob.
